Winston Churchill once quipped, “You can always count on Americans to do the right thing – after they’ve tried everything else.” If he had been watching, he’d be raising a toast right now. Or not. Old Churchill was a white supremacist. The US Treasury has finally done what should have been done ages ago: sanctioned our very own roi-bouffon, Michel Martelly. And let’s just say, it’s about time!

For those who’ve been keeping up with the shenanigans, Martelly’s rise to power was nothing short of a farce. WikiLeaks cables from the 2011 elections show that the US Embassy wasn’t just an innocent bystander; it was actively pushing for Martelly to advance to the second round and ultimately become president. The same president who, despite a resume marred with drug trafficking and, allegedly, a crack habit, was allowed yet to dance his way into office, squander the PetroCaribe funds, ally with gangs, and inflict the most damaging political party on the unsuspecting Haitian population.

Martelly’s tenure could be a comedy of errors, if only it weren’t so tragic. From his lavish spending to his criminal connections, he turned Haiti’s prospects into a mess of epic proportions. He took the country on a disastrous ride only to leave the nation teetering on the brink, mired in corruption and criminal alliances. If there’s one thing Martelly excelled at, it was turning potential into pandemonium.

So, thank you, US Treasury, for finally getting around to sanctioning this disastrous ‘leader.’ It’s a welcome step, even if it’s a bit late to the party. We can only hope that this sanction is the beginning of a more responsible approach to supporting Haiti. Churchill’s wisdom rings true – sometimes it takes a while, but eventually, the right thing is done. Here’s to more decisive action and a brighter future for Haiti!
